What Is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is an altered yet natural mental state in which people experience deep relaxation and enhanced attention, concentration, and suggestibility. Contrary to the general misconception, hypnosis isn’t a sleep-like state, but is a state of hyper-awareness.
While there are many other myths and misconceptions about hypnosis, it is a safe modality that has therapeutic benefits, most notably in the reduction and even elimination of addictions, pain, anxiety, traumas, grief and many other challenging states induced by unconscious past conditioning.
Types of Hypnosis
There are different ways that hypnosis can be delivered:
Remotely Guided hypnosis: This form of hypnosis involves the use of recorded instructions, entrancing sound frequencies or music to induce a hypnotic state. There exist many online sites and applications that offer this form of hypnosis.
In-person Hypnosis: This other form of hypnosis happens with the help of a practitioner, in order to ease and even reverse conditions including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, addictions, to name a few.
Self-hypnosis: Self-hypnosis is a self-induced hypnotic state. It is often used for easing pain or stress.
Impact of Hypnosis
The experience of hypnosis may vary from one person to another.
While most people report feeling a sense of extreme relaxation during the hypnotic state, others may remain fully aware and able to carry out conversations while under hypnosis and still benefit fully from their session.
Many people think that they cannot be hypnotised, but research has shown that most people are able to experience the hypnotic trance state. The theta brain wave state -which is the specific hypnosis or trance state- is a natural state that all people experience at least twice every day: just before falling asleep and just after waking up. In fact, people are in trance most of their waking time. It’s the state of the most predominant domain of the mind, the unconscious, and it overrides most of our daily life.
Young children tend to be the fastest and most inducible into hypnosis because their default state is of the unconscious mind, their mind is at the theta brain wave frequency.
How can I benefit from Hypnosis?
If you want to fully benefit from hypnosis, it is important to keep an open mind.
Rest assured that no one can be hypnotised without their consent and hypnosis does require voluntary participation on the part of the client.
While people often feel that their actions under hypnosis seem to occur without the influence of their will, a hypnotist cannot make the client perform actions that are against their wishes or their morality.
While hypnosis can be used to enhance performance, it cannot make people stronger or more athletic than their existing physical capabilities. However, hypnosis can shift their beliefs about themselves, release existing limitations or blockages for them to enhance their performance and quality of life.
What happens during a hypnosis session?
During a typical hypnotherapy session, the practitioner discusses and agrees with the client on the desired changes they want in their life. After that, the practitioner leads the client safely into a deeply relaxed yet alert state, then guides them into an intimate conversation with their unconscious mind, gives commands or suggestions to their mind to change specific behavioural patterns which will be conducive to future positive and more beneficial results.
Before the end of the session, the practitioner will then guide the client gradually back to their regular conscious state. They will then discuss the experience, including reactions, progress, and insights. The sessions may vary in duration but often lasts for about one to one and a half hours.
Often few sessions are necessary to reach the client’s desired results. The repetition will allow the client to reach each time a deeper and deeper state of hypnosis and lasting results.
